Sexual misconduct has been a dark twisted part of the world for a long time, although it was never fully out there in the open as it is now. The recent events and revelations surrounding Harvey Weinstein and other prominent characters in Hollywood shone a light on its prevalence in the workplace. Movements like #metoo and Times Up took over the internet by a storm with the sole purpose of letting everyone know that there are unheard and untold stories of survivors that were suffering silence, while helping them to be heard and take the necessary action about it. In such an era, gender equality is one of the most important aspects to be focused on within the work environment. Stressing on the importance of equal treatment in the workplace, where gender does not play a deciding role in one’s professional career.
Relevant to both men and women
Although we may not see that a significant gap or difference between genders at work, there may be certain elements that linger in the back of people’s minds. Wondering if a certain incident took place based on the gender of those involved. Leave no gaps for questioning or misunderstanding, address everything out in the open to avoid issues from arising. Open up discussions between men and women to recognize if any unidentified issues that exist, and organise workshops that promote a healthy workplace culture with a gender equal workforce.
Misunderstandings and miscommunications
Communication varies from person to person, and gender is no exception to that. What may be perceived as friendly conversation may come off differently by the person on the receiving end. Although this is not something you may notice often, certain behaviors and sentiments may hurt or anger people involved, questioning if it was aimed at the gender they belong to. Encouraging employees to be considerate in their communication process, while understanding that the same language and tone may not be perceived the same way will help avoid conflicts and disputes.
Gender diversity boosts business success
A Catalyst research found that organisations with the highest representation of women on their top management teams experienced better financial performance than those with the lowest representation. This does not intend priority or increasing the population of women, is the right way to go, just that a healthy balance of the mix will help the organisation soar. Diversity and equality among the diverse population promotes greater achievements, as the mix will open avenues in different direction that will help the organisation’s overall success.
Everyone is unique in their own way, and gender has no part to place in the unique qualities and capabilities that each individual character holds. Which is why it is important to promote a workplace that puts individuality first and not judge based on gender. Because in a workplace full of cultural, gender and religious diversity, the constant should be that everyone is equally as important and appreciated regardless of those that set them apart.
