No matter what professional work you are into, it is important to be an expert in your trade. In order to achieve this success, you must possess a wide variety of social skills including work place professionalism, honestly, integrity, good manners and good attitude. When you are a HR professional, you not only need these skills but also a few others that are niche to the industry.

Few ways to make yourself a better HR professional are:

1. Tap into your transferrable skills- These are the skills that you have acquired in a non-HR job and volunteer work, which are very valuable. It is necessary to make it a point to put them in to good use. In fact, there are times when those transferrable skills can help us step inside the daily operation and contribute in a different way to the company’s bottomline.

2. Never forget leadership- Everyone is a leader and leadership is not attached to a particular job title. Leadership is complicated as it includes skills like communication, decision making ability and self-awareness. Just like a game, we never perfect our game, we just keep practicing to improve our skills and we need to constantly be adding new tactics.

3. Inspire others- The more you inspire others to understand how and why HR is needed, and how we can work to their benefit, the more you will be a recognized as a leader in your company. If you have passion, there will be passion in your corporate culture. If not, it will just be another job for you and those who work for your organization.4. Assess your knowledge- It is always good to list down the knowledge, skills and competencies you feel confident with and the ones you would like to improve. It is necessary to do that every ones in a while. You need to identify your weak areas, and see how you can improve those areas.

5. Set up goals- The best way to turn recommendations into reality, is first setting up goals. Make a plan for your professional development. It is how things get done. Use S.M.A.R.T for goal setting and development plans. Start with learning something new.

6. Networking- We must constantly update our skills to stay relevant. Whether it is finding the job we want in HR or getting promoted, our goal must be to always stay ahead. To do that, we need to build relationships to share our knowledge and skills with others, so they will share theirs with us.

7. Be a strategic thinker- HR professionals must align with the company goals by learning what those goals are and to support them. Make sure that every employee understands their part in supporting the culture of the organisation. There are many other qualities that make a good Human Resource professional, but the above are the most important ones. So make sure you start today, so tomorrow you become a successful HR professional.
