You do know who the good ones are- the one whom you can always count on to stay late to help you meet a deadline or pick up a crucial item you need for your presentation at the last minute.
But don’t you often hear your managers complaining about their best employees leaving? All they do is complain and put the blame on everything under the sun. These things could be avoided, it just needs a fresh perspective and some extra effort from the managers.
The following 3 practices are the worst offenders, and they must be abolished if needed to hang on to good employees.
1.Bad boss, bad relationship.
Having a bad boss is one of the reasons why an employee would leave. The boss is too much of an integral part of an employee’s daily life at work for an uncomfortable relationship. An employee does not need to be friends with their boss but they need to have a non-toxic relationship. This would undermine the employee’s engagement, confidence and commitment.
2.When bosses overwork their best employee
This would burn a good employee out. It is quite tempting to work your best people hard but overworking your best employee is perplexing and counterproductive. If work load of the talented employee increases, they should also be given a good status. Talented employees will take on more workload but they would not want their jobs to suffocate them in the process. Raises, promotions and title changes are all acceptable ways to increase workload.
3.No recognition given to the employee
It is easy to underestimate the power of a pat on the back, especially with top performers who are motivatedProviding a lot of genuine appreciation and recognition is as icing on the cake for employee retention.
"Always treat your employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers" -Stephen R. Covey
Managers tend to blame the company for turnover problems while ignoring the crux of the matter: people do not leave jobs, they leave their managers!
