There are plenty of rules in the society. A red light means stop and most people obey. In our workplace there are certain rules we need to respect. If an individual is physically assaulted or leak the company’s confidential information to a third party, it is very likely, the employee gets fired.
Most employees have grasp those rules but it tends to be the unspoken. Unwritten rules of behaviour is that causes most problems at the workplace.
Here are rules to create respectful interactions at your workplace:
1. Giving attention for the views of employees
Science shows us that when we show curiosity to others, it creates empathy among individuals. By allowing employees to share their thoughts and considering them, we understand their motivations.
2. Keep an open mind
Most of us tend to stick to our own view believing it is correct. But there are many sources of knowledge that exists within the workplace and all we have to do is take time to explore them. It is necessary to learn about a new co-worker or have lunch with another department as it is the way of getting to know new news, or have a different perspective.
3. Look for opportunities to socialize with others
When we interact with different types of people in our workplace, it is easier to understand our differences and get people to open up more on their views allowing them to express their beliefs.
4. Accept your faults and it is absolutely alright to.
We assume that we are always right and with this mentality, we reduce the consumption of new information. A better approach would be to accept that you may not be right all the time and allow yourself to learn from your co-workers differences.
5. Be real
Begin positive interactions by being honest and sincere with colleagues to make genuine connections. If you pretend to be something you are not, it only makes you fail to make real lasting connections. This also would lose trust and neither of those would get you very far.
Practice these simple tips regularly. This would ensure that respect is an action that all employees follow.
