Most of us have a goal or hopes to achieve in the future. Some includes long-term career plan or dream job that they want to obtain. These may seem difficult to achieve but with a proper, practical career plan, it would appear much more manageable. Future is uncertain but with a solid career plan in place, it can become a reliable roadmap to get to whatever place we desire.

Few tips for a successful career plan would be:

1. Review your career plan annually.

Many of us have annual plans every year, among everything we plan on annual basis, why not plan your career? Find a day or weekend once a year, when you feel you are able to sit down and focus on a major career change, block out all distractions so that you have the time to truly focus on your career as to what you really want out of your career and in your life. By making career planning an annually, you will feel more secure in your career choice and direction. Moreover you know exactly where you stand, where you want to be and you will be much prepared on the difficulties that lie ahead your job and career.

2. Compare your current career plan with your previous plan.

You need to map your job and career path with the previous plan to see how much of it has worked out for you. You should not be dwelling in the past, taking all the time reviewing and reflecting on the path. Whether it is narrow, bumpy or filled with dead-ends, it will allow you to plan for your future. When you have mapped your past, you need to take time to see the reason why it looks the way it is and see if you are satisfied. You need to see what you could have done better, and if you had another alternative, would things be better off then. You also need to see how it would be in your future.

3. Reflect on Your Likes and Dislikes, Needs and Wants

'Change' is something that happens in our life; everybody changes, so do our likes and dislikes. Some of the things we loved and wanted few years back would not be what we love now or want anymore. It is a must to always take time to reflect on the things in your life apart from your job List down your likes and dislikes of your job activities and use this list to examine your current job and career path to see if that is what you really like and want. If your job and career still fall mostly in the like column, then you know you are still on the right path; else if your job activities fall mostly in the dislike column, now is the time to take an action- explore or examining new jobs and new careers. Finally, take the time to really think about what it is you want or need from your work, from your career. Are you willing to become financially independent or if there is anything else you are expecting. Take time to understand the motives that drive your sense of success and happiness.

4. Networking is crucial

It is most necessary to work on your networking skills since networks that you create are relevant to your job career and choices. Networking is not only about making contacts which would be useful for your career but is also about getting to know and earning respect of those that may be able to support you in your career aspirations.

5. Find yourself a mentor or consultant

A mentor could be your parents or supervisors or someone who you are inspired by and want to follow footsteps of or find a career consultant. You need to speak to people who can widen your knowledge on the field/ industry and who would guide you and help you review your career plans and objectives.

6. Stay flexible

You might have a number of different areas that you could see yourself working in but it is necessary to experiment and explore to see what is it that you prefer mostly and what are you good at. If you need any additional skills, follow a course or another degree.
